According to VATUSA's staff list it would appear I have been selected as ZOAs new Air Traffic Manager! It is an honor to be picked and I hope that I am worthy of the position. Following Tom is not going to be easy, he is the longest serving ATM I think VATUSA has seen, and he has done immeasurable good for ZOA. He leaves me some big shoes to fill. I hope some of my ideas will put me on the path to coming close.
I have a lot of ideas right now for ZOA, most of which won't, and shouldn't happen, but here is a list of some of the plans that I hope to accomplish first as the ATM.
My primary goal as the ATM, besides the daily administrative duties, will be to build a sense of community at ZOA. I think this organization has the potential to be so much more than it is, and give so much more back to it's members. I intend to work with the rest of the FAB to help foster a sense of community around these parts.
Second, directly following from that, I intend to make the FAB much more open than it has been in the past. As a part of that I will be providing at least bi-weekly updates on what the staff is currently doing, and what the plans are going forward. As a part of this I hope we can get feedback on our projects, and help brainstorming for new ones to make ZOA a better place for everyone!
Third, in the week or two to come I will be taking a close look at the FAB and what its role should be in ZOA and redefining the different staff positions to help us fit that role better. Don't worry, this shouldn't involved major change, but in my opinion the FAB can use a little shaking up and fine tuning to help provide the most possible leadership and guidance to ZOA. In this process of evaluating, and as part of the beginning of brainstorming though, I would like to get some feedback from the ARTCC as a whole. I know you all are busy people but if you could spare a few moments of your time and complete the brief survey I have below and e-mail it to me at david.carman at und.nodak.edu I would greatly appreciate it!
Survey:
1) What does the FAB mean to you? What role do you see it currently playing?
2) What would you like the FAB to be? What role do you want the FAB to play in the ARTCC?
3) What would make ZOA feel like more of a community to you?
4) What is the biggest weakness you see in ZOA right now?
5) How do you think FAB can improve that weakness?
6) What would you like to see in the next ZOA event?
7) A random trivia question with answer that you think no one else will know (preferably aviation related).
In the spirit of a recent FAA mandate I hope that we can "all work together to prevent operational errors." and improve ZOA in the weeks and months to come!
Sincerely,
David Carman
