To help clarify the different tests that students go through, since there seems to be confusion on them.

First, the oakartcc written and ots tests are separate from the rating tests that are part of the vatusa training department. The rating tests both written and ots:

Standards for student advancement are as follows:

Student - Student is received at the time you received your CID certification number by VATSIM. Entrance test, no ots.

Senior Student - Ground Control/Tower -Guidelines for advancement to Senior Student required that you have download the study packets and reference materials on the training page, and have made yourself familiar with the materials. You must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill necessary to control at the Tower level and below. A written exam will consist of an "open book" test with questions derived from a test pool. After receiving a passing score of 80% or higher, a practical "over-the-shoulder" test will be given in one or more PC sessions within your ARTCC, or at the candidates ARTCC according to the student's preference. Additional practical testing is conducted at the ARTCC Chief's discretion.

Controller - Approach - Guidelines for advancement to Controller required that you have download the study packets and reference materials on the training page, and have made yourself familiar with the materials. You must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill necessary to control at the Approach level and below.

Senior Controller - Center - Guidelines for advancement to Controller required that you have download the study packets and reference materials on the training page, and have made yourself familiar with the materials. You must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill necessary to control at the Center level and below.

These ratings/positions are outside the oakartcc tests. For instance, a senior student (S3) can operate approach without having the vatusa controller rating as long as the student shows the knowledge/ability to work approach via the zoa training program and tests.

Therefore, you will see OTS test for both vatusa ratings and oakartcc
tests. The one thing we could do is combine the tests at the same time, example: A student is ready for the b/c tower tests and takes both the written for b/c tower and student 3 tests. In this way we can do just one OTS which will cover both b/c tower and the S3 since the S3 rate is for tower.

At present, oakartcc does not have a written for center certification and your not required to have a controller or sr controller rating to be certified for center.

Hope this clears up some of the confusion on OTS tests. Any questions just post or email me.
