View Full Version : On certain STAR/DP charts and neck pains...

I have been wondering for a while now... there are certain STAR and DP charts that are meant to be read in a 'landscape' format, but they were scanned in 'portrait' format. The KSFO MOD2 STAR comes immedately to mind.

Perhaps I am asking too much (dunno how big a project it might be, or how hard it is to change things on the server)... but would it be feasable to take the GIFs of these selected STARs/DPs and turn them 90 degrees so that the body of the diagram is oriented correctly? I believe all that would be sideways then would be the header and footer titles. The instructions and frequencies are readable when the map is oriented correctly.

Just a suggestion... and a tiny one at that. All of the charts/plates in the ZOA 'library' are fabulous and a great resource to have available. ^_^

Hey James, I'm working correcting all the chart pages so they will be displayed more clearly and proper format, this will take some time since there are literaly hundreds of them :o how ever this is on the side burner for the time being.

The funny thing about this, is that this is how they actually are printed in the leaflet editions of the Terminal Procedures Charts! I was thinking the same, and someone had just unbound them, and slid them through a scanner like you would a copier, and they come out as is, as they are in the booklet. I wish we could yell at who's making them to do it, but I'm just glad we're getting them.

(mental note: must yell at myairplane.com to get the new cycle posted.)

Hey Chief,

If I may suggest to make the charts in a pop-up window outside all frames? it will make it much easier for people to handle. If you need I can give you a code to generate a pop-up and set the window size and stuff like that.

James and all,

I think I may have a partial and not entirely ideal solution to the issue.

I ran into a utility which saves into a pdf file, anything that you print. The one I use is called PDF995 but you can search the web for others that you may be comfortable with. You can try the keywords pdf writer or something similar.

So what you can do is download or open the the charts you need flipped then "print" them to a file in pdf format using the utility. You can then open the file you just saved using Adobe's Acrobat Reader which has a really neat function of rotating images any which way you like. It is one of the menu items.

Similarly Rob, we can save the charts as pdf files in the server if you wish. Of course it is extra work generating all those pdfs. I would be willing to help with this task if needed.

Hey, so far all the suggestions sound good.

Florin, I dunno about you but when I click on the link from the airport info section, the charts and plates always pop up in a new window. Your milage may vary, of course...

Reece... a good idea, and after the server tripped and fell last weekend during the Flyout, I really am going to pursue my thought of caching airport information locally on my machine somehow (probably just for the Bravo and Charlie airports). It would also save me download time on my dial-up while trying to control with voice. I know Acrobat lets you rotate files, and that's definitely a good solution. However, I would be curious how the file sizes compare between the PDFs and and GIFs.

Brad: I get that impression too, that someone just ran them though the scanner. If it was in a booklet or I printed the pages out and bound them into a binder, it would be no sweat to just turn the binder. Still, I totally agree with you that it's great to have all this information available from the real things.

And finally... to da Chief: No sweat, man. I know there must be hundreds of graphic files. I tried doing a 'make available offline' bookmark at work, starting from the Airport Info page, three links deep and staying within the oakartcc server and it took forever! I was just curious if someone was aware of this problem or working on it. If you'd like some help, I'd be willing to give it a shot. Maybe sort through an airport a night. Might also help shore up those final misplaced links, too.

hey James
this would be greatly appreciated, when i transfered the information from the old server to this one the directory structue was totaly different from mine. Took me nearly forever to change all the links. I still get a broken link every once in a while.
If you come across any please let me know and i'll corect it ASAP.
we have a few guys on the web team now Rich Wyatt, Florin Petrutiu and myself
were working on developing some kick ass features. Dont ask what it is :) don't want to spoil the surprise :P

James,

The resulting pdf file is about twice as big as the original gif file. It would be an issue with space and performance.

I may be missing the point, but if you open the gif files in MS Photo Ed you can rotate them to your hearts content. I realize that can lead to quite a few open windows and needing to store the files on the hard drive...but at least it's an interim fix for those charts that are oriented landscape?

Eric, you're absolutely right. It's only a minor inconvenience to load the GIF into your favorite editing program (unless it's a heavy program like Photoshop) and rotate it in there. However, you said it yourself that it's an interim fix. Now, I'm not banging my shoe on the table and demanding things be fixed RIGHT NOW! I know the web crew is bustin' tail to get the site looking good and running smooth (and developing kick ass features? My my...) so if it takes some time, that's okay. Heck, I'll probably just keep reading those charts sideways (takes a bit of concentration, that) for the time being. I just figured as long as the site was undergoing major reconstructive surgery, now might be as good a time as any to get it settled.

I'm just thinking toward the future, and having a clean, polished look. After all, we're not the only ones looking up this information. I personally have directed a few pilots to our chart library, and I'm sure there are plenty more who drop in without our knowing it.

As always, just some thoughts, greatly overvalued at $0.02.

James
