I did not know this, not becoz I wasn't trained or I wasn't told, but I just don't know enuf how to read a chart :). It's amazing what can be on the second page.

The chart for your reference:
page 1: http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/1005/00346RENO.PDF
page 2: http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/1005/00346RENO_C.PDF

When exactly would we use this? What requirements need to be satisfied for using the next hdg?

I posted it here as TWR could also be assigning the hdg, but probably only at DEP's discretion, still!!

Cheers!!

We haven't attempted to train anyone on using this because it would only be used in a scenario where the departure controller has a very firm grasp on how he wants to separate the outbound aircraft in tight sequences, based partly on what direction they will need to go to get on course, plus what he did with the aircraft ahead of him. To be completely effective it needs to be used in conjunction with departure releases and close coordination between tower and departure. That is, it's only useful for full-tilt-boogie event traffic volumes.

Ah makes sense, but it was pretty cool to know that such a provision existed.

usually procedures like this will be in a LOA between the TWR and APP giving TWR the authority to assign fan headings to allow for less than 3 miles in trail

RNO SOP might say something like: turbojet and high performance transport props must be issued reno sid and for 16l/r must be directed to fly the I-RNO Localizer South Course until advised unless and operational advantage is obtained. Phraseology being.... (acid) cleared to (destination) via Reno 4 departure, fly the Reno localizer south course until advised, vector to (assigned route)

An odd note, US Airways cannot accept heading 156 or any assignment east of runway heading.

Rwy 34l/r heading 330 is the Reno sid standard, but headings 330 through 360 may be assigned as determined appropriate or when conditions warrant

for IFR noise reduction, turbojets and transport props should remain on tower assigned departure heading until reaching the MVA or a point 5 miles from the airport before being vectored on course. Tracon should avoid altitude restrictions below 10000

I can check the LOAs/SOPs for RNO, and I did skim through them already. I didn't find anything specific about this. Mike are you able to access the LOA net from RHV?
