Phraseology change effective September 30th, 2010

Gentlemen, this phraseology change regards a change of the "taxi into position and hold" phraseology.

The changes will be effective from September 30th, 2010 onward.

The "taxi into position and hold" (TIPH) will be replaced by "lign up and wait" (LUAW).

I must say, I don't get the FAA sometimes. It probably took some well paid individual several months to ponder this idea.

Maybe I don't know enough, but I don't see the difference in the two phrases. Why was it needed???

The main idea why this is coming into effect is to standardize the aviation phraseology and use the ICAO phraseology as much as possible, as well as the NTSB recommending its useage, along with the Air Traffic Procedures Advisory Committee.

All we have to do is remove the TIPH and replace it with LUAW in our controlling, thats it.

ICAO phraseology makes a lot more sense IMHO.

I think it's a good change. Since LUAW is used throughout the world, it's about time the US adopts the phraseology. Therefore when a pilot flies anywhere, they hear the same procedures and phraseology.


It might sound weird at first but when we get used to it we will forget about TIPH.

i find it a bit inconsistent, to be honest. But I don't make the rules. It's really funny telling a guy to Line up and wait, then tell aircraft on final that a guy sitting on an intersecting runway is holding in position. shouldn't he be lined up and waiting? hahaha. Contradictions.

thats what I told my boss. its going to be a mess to inform all of the GA community. Hey at least now I can say "hold position" without worrying they will take the runway!

I think a landing CTL phraseology might be something like:

"United 522 Heavy, Wind 220 at 12 Gusting 15, Traffic waiting in poistion runway 1 Left, Runway 28 Right Cleared to Land".

That doesnt sound that bad.

In this case its still the old "traffic holding in position runway 1L". I understand that its weird to have part of the phraseology changed to LUAW, and leave other parts of it with TIPH, but it is what it is.
