OK! We?re now less than 24 hrs form the start of Calscreamin 9 and I?m sure that the butterflies will be starting for many of us soon if not already. Here are some suggestions and some pointers for those of you that have not worked one of these events before or have and just need some reminders.

-First and most important thing to remember is to have fun. This is what it is all about.

-Next to have fun you need to be prepared.

-Make sure you will have everything you will need within reach when you sit down at the computer and start to log on.

-Have snacks, drinks water/soda whatever you think you would like to make your day fun (Use a cooler if you like).

-Turn the phone off or let it go to message if it is important they will leave a message.

-Have plenty of paper and writing material available this includes pens and or more than one pencil incase the lead breaks.
-Have access to the charts that will be needed for your sector this includes both normal and reversed wind direction sids/stars. (Do Not Count on the web pages being available if it goes down your screwed).

-If your running a marathon control session from 11-5 without a relief you may want to have a long cord on your headset or have some means for going to the restroom while your busy controlling. If your computer is in a private environment a travel potty may be a good thing to have on hand.

-Please try and give as much notice to Rob Jarrock if you need to leave prior to your scheduled time or if your relief is late showing and you need to go.

-If you see that things are getting backed up and you are going to get swamped call the Controller above or below you as needed and the Coordinator Rob Jarrock and tell them you need a traffic hold for your sector. Don?t wait for the problem to occur before calling for help.

-Handoff your traffic in time for them to contact the next controller before reaching the border or altitude they have been assigned. (Pilots hate to stop their climb if not needed).

-Don?t get flustered take a deep breath and get control of the situation. Do Not handoff your problems to the next controller fix it then handoff. You would not want someone handing off their problems to you.

-If you are getting slammed by pilots calling tell them to standby and get things organized then have them call you one at a time.

-Don?t get involved with one plane that may be a problem and let the others get out of control. Keep a scan of your airspace and traffic plan ahead for what you will do incase of a problem.

Again Remember this is for the Controllers and Pilots to have fun so keep that in mind and HAVE FUN!

See you on the Scope Sunday . Remember log on at least 30 minutes before your shift begins.

Man that is the funnyest thing I've read in a long time :D, a travel potty.

Seriously, the tone and kaos of the event is in the hands of you norcal (app & departure) contollers. Give us center guys good spacing on the departures and we will make sure to give you lots of room on the inbounds.

One more thing in order to be prepared, write the list of rw servers down and be prepared to use all of them. My guess is that we will have problems with the main rw servers going down. In fact may I suggest using one of the non standard servers from the start, or even host your own.

See everyone tomorrow

Tower/gnd/del guys, keep track of which flight has which part done. write down if clearance issued, taxi instructions given etc. It really helps. Towers space your take offs to allow minimum of 15miles separation. Always be prepared to place flights on hold, and ALWAYS get a release from departure/approach first. Be sure to let approach know if you need him to hold inbounds. Keep the chat messages to a minimum, those of you who do have G/G working use them. Be patient and have fun. Pilots will bug you and complain. Try keep cool with it.

One more RW server you can use tomorrow is rw.mcm.edu. I have set this server up just incase we have problems with the regular RW servers.

I know this comes at the 11th hour and the 53rd minute, but... it kinda combines two threads. IE, the one about the STARs/DPs and this one, vis-a-vis not getting caught with your pants down if/when the server dies from the traffic bombardment.

I found this wonderful little utility called QuadSucker (http://www.quadsucker.com/quadweb/) that rips down websites wholesale and stows them on your hard drive. It will reformulate the links to make them point locally on your hard drive and follow links as deep as you set it. It's shareware and I tried it once to rip out the whole of ZOA's airport information database. It works well, and perhaps even too well, since I had it set to jump off-site and it started yanking a few things out of flysfo.com and other off-site locales. Which is not a bad thing (for example, the terminal layout chart for KSFO).

I would suggest at least letting it lose on the airport page you plan to work (one link deep should do fine) so in the event the server goes down, you've got a local backup. I ripped down everything originally, then decided to try it again with different settings, but you can imagine on a dial-up, it takes a small invenstment in time. So I just got KOAK's page and links for now, more to come later.

But I highly suggest looking this over. Couldn't be easier...

By the way, gents... d'you realize that the airport database alone, searching 3 links deep, has over 900 pages/images and weighs in at 27.5 megabytes? Talk about a library of information!

Oh, one more thing I found: ALL THE LINKS FOR THE KSJC DPs ARE BROKEN!! I don't remember who is working KSJC, but you'll probably have to go somewhere else to get the DPs... unless our crackerjack webteam can perform a last-minute miracle fix?
