1. PURPOSE:

This Center Policy Statement (CPS) describes the Mentor Program for ZOA ARTCC.

2. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This CPS shall be maintained, revised, updated or cancelled by the Facility Advisory Board and shall be effective unless there is a conflict with the VATUSA/VATSIM policies in which case they shall supercede these policies.

3. DISTRIBUTION:

This CPS is applicable to all controllers.

4. BACKGROUND:

The Mentor Program will be established to augment the Instructor Staff in providing training. Mentors are controllers who are willing to volunteer their time to provide instruction to other controllers. Mentors are primarily intended to support the orientation and initial training of Student and Sr. Student grade controllers, as described in the Training Program policy statement.

5. MENTOR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

  1. The Training Administrator wil be responsible for monitoring the success of the mentor program.
  2. A candidate mentor may be any controller who can meet the requirements for the mentor rating as listed in the Promotions and Ratings Policy Statement, including visiting controllers. Candidates should apply to the Training Administrator.
  3. A list of authorized mentors will be maintained on the ZOA Controller Roster Page.
  4. Mentors are restricted to instruct only in those areas of knowledge required by their current grade and ratings.
  5. The primary instruction method for mentors should be one on one instruction sessions, either on Sweatbox or on the live VATSIM servers. When conducting a session the mentor will use the "M", and the student the "S" modifier in their callsigns, per the communications SOP. The mentor is responsible to insure the student adheres to all SOPs and practices. The student will be assumed to be the operational controller of the position by adjacent facilities, unless the they are explicitly informed otherwise.
  6. Mentors and students may also engage in "non-operational" training sessions when logged on as an observer.
  7. Mentors are encouraged to use published "Practical Test Standards" as well as other posted training material to insure complete and accurate instruction.
  8. Mentors are required to study and apply the Training Program Policy Statement (CPS_005).
