Alexander W. Bower 41, born April 4, 1965, Alex passed away suddenly at his home in San Francisco on January 31, 2007. Originally from Los Angeles, Alex moved to San Francisco several years ago and considered it his home. The son of an American Airlines pilot he went on to earn his certification as a small aircraft pilot and frequently flew in Southern California until an injury grounded him from flying solo permanently. A master of aeronautics, he made a point to squash anyone's fear of flying by explaining the safety features of numerous aircraft. As a certified skipper, Alex enjoyed yachting as well, spending many summers captaining charter yachts to Catalina Island. Alex's most recent career was launched with a degree in Oenology from UC Davis. With over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Alex boasted an extensive knowledge of wines and spirits. He was extremely comfortable behind a bar, both entertaining and enjoying the company of his patrons and co-workers. He was always trying to assure that every patron left his bar feeling that they had made a new friend. Cycling was Alex's most recent passion, enhanced by his participation in the fundraising event AIDS Lifecycle, a 545 mile bike ride from SF to LA. In 2006. His stories and excitement of his first ride in 2005 were the inspiration for Team Noe, a cycling team composed of seven friends from Noe Valley who completed the ride in 2006. When not training for the ride, Alex could commonly be found on long bike rides alone or with friends, frequently riding from Noe Valley over the GG Bridge to Tiburon and back. Alex's friends affectionately deemed him The Mayor of Noe Valley, as he was well acquainted with many of the local residents and merchants in the neighborhood he called home. A charming and vibrant man, Alex lived life to the fullest. Keen to the value of love and friendship, Alex had charisma and charm that were hard to ignore. There was no doubt that Alex would help a friend in any situation and would literally offer the shirt off his back. Anyone who knew Alex smiles at the thought of his appreciation of humor and making sure his friends were doing well, Alex always did his best to make sure his friends were in good spirits. A man with a heart of gold, Alex has left a legacy of goodwill and fond memories for the countless people that he has touched in his life. Alex Bower, you are sorely missed and will be in our hearts forever. Contributions may be made in Alex's honor to www.AidsLifecycle.org under Team Noe.
